Ellison L. Crawford correspondence and miscellany, 1852-1895.

Consists chiefly of handwritten letters, all but one of which are from Crawford to his father, James B. Crawford in Castine, Maine, dated 1852-1854. Crawford describes his voyage from Boston to San Francisco via Rio de Janeiro and Cape Horn, the second part of which was travelled aboard the ship Mary Merrill; living conditions and prices of provisions in San Francisco upon his arrival; and gold mining conditions at Spanish Dry Diggings, El Dorado County. Accompanying the letters are a handwritten draft of an undated, unsigned political speech (8 p.) concerning the Civil War and upcoming presidential elections, in which Abraham Lincoln is seekingre-election; one page of newspaper clippings of two marriage announcements; and a printed funeral notice dated 1895, for Fred B. La Pierre, of Georgetown, Calif., who died in San Francisco.

Ellison Lassell Crawford was born in Castine, Maine in 1833. He sailed to California in 1852. He first settled in San Francisco and worked in a hotel as a cook. He later mined and owned a store in Spanish Diggings and Spanish Bar in El Dorado County. From 1859 to 1861, Crawford was Postmaster and Justice of the Peace of Greenwood, California. In 1880, he served as Minute Clerk of the California Constitutional Convention. He died in California in 1895. From the description of Correspo...
